Gary’s Story

Gary had never planned to be homeless. A series of setbacks – losing his job when the warehouse he worked in closed, then an injury that left him unable to work for weeks – left him on the edge. By the time January came, the cold nights on the streets of Harrow had worn him down.

One evening, just after dusk, a volunteer at the day drop-in pointed him to the FirmFoundation Winter Night Shelter, a place that opens each January through March to offer people a warm bed, a meal and a chance to rest out of the freezing weather.

“Before the shelter, every night felt endless and cold. At FirmFoundation I was given a bed, a hot meal, and respect. Being treated like a person again helped me breathe, think, and believe that rebuilding my life was possible, when I had almost given up.”

Each night he stayed, Gary noticed how the shelter wasn’t just providing a bed. Volunteers helped him sort out benefits and connect with a GP, part of the ongoing support FirmFoundation offers beyond just warmth and shelter. “They didn’t rush me,” he said. “They asked what I needed, and they listened. That mattered.”

By the end of the shelter season, with help from staff and volunteers, Gary had secured an appointment with a housing support service and started looking at shared accommodation options. “I still have challenges ahead,” he admitted, “but the shelter gave me something I thought I’d lost: belief that I could keep going.”
