Vadimir’s Story

Jim never imagined he would need a night shelter. A relationship breakdown followed by unstable work slowly unravelled everything. By the time winter arrived, he was exhausted, anxious, and sleeping rough. “The nights mess with your head,” Jim said. “You’re cold, you don’t sleep properly, and you’re always on edge.”

When Jim was referred to the FirmFoundation Winter Night Shelter, he arrived carrying more fear than hope. That changed quickly. “The first thing I noticed was how calm it was,” he said. “No judgement. Just people helping people.”

FirmFoundation gave me safety when I had none. A warm bed, food, and people who cared. Being treated with dignity helped me regain confidence and believe I could move forward again, even after everything had fallen apart.

Each evening brought a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, and time to rest without worry. “Being able to shower and put on clean clothes sounds small,” Jim explained, “but it helps you feel like yourself again.”

What stayed with Jim most was the sense of dignity. Volunteers took time to talk, to listen, and to help him think about next steps. “They treated me like I still mattered,” he said. “That gave me confidence I didn’t know I’d lost.”

With support and encouragement, Jim began rebuilding. “The shelter didn’t fix everything,” he said, “but it gave me breathing space. It gave me hope, and that’s where change starts.”
