Mike’s Story

For Mike, homelessness was not just about losing a roof over his head. It was about becoming invisible. Nights were long, cold, and unsafe. “You don’t just lose a home,” he said. “You lose your place in the world. You’re tired all the time, always watching your back.”

Winter was the hardest. The darkness set in early, the cold crept into his bones, and sleep came in broken fragments. When Mike arrived at the FirmFoundation Winter Night Shelter, what struck him first was the quiet. “I could finally put my head down and not worry about someone waking me up or going through my pockets,” he said.

FirmFoundation gave me a break from the streets when winter was at its worst. A warm meal, a safe bed, clean clothes and people who cared. It felt like family. They gave me hope and the strength to keep living and not give up again.

Inside the shelter, there was warmth, a proper bed, and a hot meal. Simple things that had been missing for far too long. “You could wash, change your clothes, feel clean again,” Mike explained. “That does something to your mind. You start to feel human.”

With encouragement and guidance, Mike began to think about his future again. “They don’t judge you,” he said. “They help you see a way forward and motivate you not to give up.”
